25/4/10 - Ian Fleming - Casino Royale

The first of the Bond novels. I liked the film so it was great to read the original. Interesting how times have changed though - this book had much simpler plot than the modern Bond films. A more gentle invocation of the 1950s glamour. I suspect Bond is also more human and sensitive in this book than the later books anyway - damn that Vesper Lynd breaking his heart.

  1. I read this whilst on holiday in Cornwall, which is almost like Monte Carlo (on a good day). I thought it was rather good: short, violent, ugly: spying in the raw. And it sets up Bond as the misogynist he truly is (see the final sentence). I thought the film did well to set it in the present and to use the book as the beginning for a new Bond actor. The sequel was a curious waste of testosterone. Damn that Vesper indeed!
